I have never towed with an SUV, but assume that I would get about the same economy using a diesel – and, say, a Pajero Sport. The van is set up correctly parallel with the car. But I do notice a visibly lower clearance on the car rear tyre to wheel arch than the front. This means I could be compromising my steering – less load to the front.
That's the issue with making something like the Pajero in modern times. The safety tech you need to cram into the car makes it so you can't really make these tiny kei car sized vehicles anymore. Ultimately that's a good thing, but it's still kind of sad. Doug talked about how tiny and effortless the Pajero's doors were. We'll never have that again.

There is a high level of quality associated with Mitsubishi parts, and I have experienced this first hand. Rubber parts on this car do not wear out
The Pajero is a very easy vehicle to maintain, given minimal electronics, unlike today's cars. From what I have understood reading Tejas' thread, there are some competent Mitsubishi ASCs in the Mumbai/Pune area, you should be good on that front.
